"The 200th anniversary of American railroading is an opportunity for all Americans to celebrate an industry whose tracks form the DNA of American life," said Kris Hoellen, Executive Director of the B&O Railroad Museum. "Through americanrail200.org, everyone can participate in the bicentennial and plan their vacations by searching the website for events and activities to attend in 2027. We invite everyone to explore, connect, and contribute."

Early partners in this celebration include leading industry and cultural institutions from major sports teams to national museums to Class I railroads. These foundational partners are committed to either hosting special events in 2027 or leveraging their powerful voices to amplify the enduring impact of American railroading.

Becoming a partner signifies a commitment to either plan an event to commemorate American railroading's 200th anniversary in 2027, or to use one’s platform to champion the contributions of the railroad to American life.

On February 28, 1827, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad became the first common carrier railroad chartered in North America for the commercial transportation of freight and passengers. The invention of the railroad transformed American life socially, culturally, and economically. Now almost 200 years later, so much of the American identity can be traced back to the railroad, such as the advent of our time zones, labor policies, first responders, and even holiday traditions such as Mother’s Day and so much more. Today this industry moves over 28 million passengers on Amtrak and facilitates over $2 billion a day of economic commerce via our freight railroads.
