Russia Claims France Plotting “Neocolonial Coups” Through Africa
According to the report, Paris has lost ground in several former colonies amid growing anti-French sentiment, fueled by accusations of military failures, interference, and past aggression.
Countries including Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have severed diplomatic ties, expelled French troops, and accused France of supporting armed groups that exacerbate the ongoing jihadist insurgency in the region.
France has maintained that it does not recognize the legitimacy of these military-led governments and has pledged to support the restoration of civilian rule in the affected nations.
The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) claimed in a statement that the French government is “frantically exploring avenues for political revenge” following the military takeovers. The agency further alleged that President Emmanuel Macron authorized French intelligence services to target so-called “undesirable leaders” in African states.
The SVR also accused France of involvement in a failed coup attempt in Burkina Faso on January 3, which reportedly included plans to assassinate military leader Ibrahim Traore, described by the agency as “one of the leaders in the fight against neocolonialism.”
Additionally, the report claimed that France is attempting to destabilize Mali through attacks on fuel convoys and city blockades and is seeking to foment unrest in the Central African Republic. The intelligence service reiterated long-standing accusations that France is “providing direct support to terrorists” and coordinating with Ukraine to supply militants with drones and instructors.
