EU Official Says Middle East Solutions Must Be Region-Led, Not Imposed
Speaking at a panel during the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in southern Türkiye on Saturday, Luigi Di Maio said the ongoing tensions in the Gulf reflect a broader weakening of international legal norms.
“If we want to try to find a solution for avoiding again another crisis, like the ongoing crisis or a wider crisis, a farther spillover, we need to work all together,” he said.
Di Maio reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to multilateral cooperation and international law, while also stressing that Europe does not seek direct involvement in armed conflict in the region.
“At the same time,” he noted, European states are assisting Gulf partners with defensive measures, including the interception of drones and missiles originating from Iran under existing bilateral arrangements.
He warned that instability in the Gulf has wide-reaching consequences beyond energy markets, pointing to its impact on global supply chains, including fertilizers, helium used in semiconductor production, and goods passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Referring to past diplomatic efforts, Di Maio said the collapse of the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement underscored the importance of including regional countries in any future negotiations.
“Every solution for the Middle East has to be a region-led process,” he said, reinforcing his call for locally driven diplomatic frameworks.
